Take your lovely theories about happily-ever-after and the downfall of every single enemy, and put them all inside a lead box. I think it’s best to approach this book (or any finale to a series, for that matter) with some trepidation. Having heard that the ending was vague and left “everything” hanging, with, supposedly, not so much as a single subplot showing any semblance of resolution, I was prepared for the worst: a cliffhanger doomed never to be resolved, with the fates of the main characters left hanging in the balance. I’ve heard a lot of bad things about this final installment in the trilogy, particularly the ending (which we will discuss in a moment), and nothing makes me more curious than a bad review. That is how much I have come to love this series.īut there was another reason (besides the unthinkably suspenseful, how-could-you-do-this-to-me-author cliffhanger at the end of book two) I was eager to get my hands on Requiem. I relate this one to you to stress exactly how desperate I was for Requiem – I couldn’t wait just two more days until the end of the vacation, even though I had, like, five more books with me at the time.

I was already reading it as I walked out of the bookstore, having acquired a new book and another tale to add to my collection of such stories of the perils faced by a reader in search of a sequel (I have many). Somehow, however, I managed to navigate my way to the nearest bookstore and get the very last copy of Requiem they had on the shelves. Not only did I not have Requiem handy, I was at a resort on the outskirts of an unfamiliar town at least a hundred miles from any bookstore I knew the location of. This was a problem, because anyone who has read the ending of Pandemonium knows that reading that cliffhanger without having book three within arm’s reach of wherever you happen to be sitting has been known to cause serious medical conditions like heart failure and shock, and minor seismic events have been documented as a result of the actions of readers unlucky enough to have a wall, door, or other physical barrier between them and the next book. When I finished Pandemonium, the second book in Lauren Oliver’s Delirium trilogy, I was on vacation. For this review, I’m going to focus on specific plot elements, because I know what you’re all thinking: that ending. Actually, it’s going to be more of a discussion than a review. As always, the writing was exquisite and the plot perfectly paced, blah-blah-blah – you heard me go on and on about that when I reviewed Pandemonium a few days ago. A few days ago, I finished the Delirium trilogy, and I have a thing or two to say about it.
